Hello! We’re back to our classic format this week, but next week I’ll be sharing some non-lame Valentine’s Day ideas and Lunar New Year events.
I’m also working on a round-up of Seattle third places (aka locations that are not home/work and encourage social interaction), so if you have a favorite, please let me know!
*This post is a little long, so don’t forget to expand if it gets cut off in your email!
💎 Local gems
Columbia City Yoga + Mind Body Hum + Ritual House + The Grinning Yogi | Columbia City, Pioneer Square, Capitol Hill, Greenwood
I used to be very involved in the local yoga scene (as a former yoga teacher and founder of a local wellness collective) until I got totally burnt out. After an extended break (and a free month of ClassPass), I’ve slowly been working my way through some new-to-me studios and been refreshed by my findings. None of these studios have mirrors, none of them are hot (just warm), and none of the teachings feel performative (at least in the classes I took). Of the four, Columbia City Yoga is my current favorite, but I’d recommend a class at any of them.
Columbia City Yoga — A beautiful studio on the second floor above the main drag, the flowing vinyasa with Shannon Angstead was my ideal yoga class.
Mind Body Hum — A two-room studio on the waterfront that has both a meditation space (with two huge gongs) and a yoga room. Parking is surprisingly easy to find on weekends, go to Cherry Street Coffee for a bagel sandwich after.
Ritual House — A beloved studio that found a new home in the same Capitol Hill neighborhood. I recommend hitting Macrina afterward and then walking through the neighborhood.
The Grinning Yogi — The Greenwood location has a funky and colorful practice room on Greenwood Ave. An old yoga friend named Rae taught a creative flow with music that made it feel like a yoga rave (in a good way).
Livbud Cafe | Fremont
This is a newish day-to-night cafe somewhat hidden by the construction on Stone Way. But it is worth checking out! I met a friend there for a late afternoon coffee and noticed many people coworking in the large, light-filled space. My golden milk latte was delicious, but I’m excited to check out their build-a-board happy hour next time. I saw that Club Cascadia is going to be hosting coworking sessions here every other week, which I hope to join in the future!
Old Saigon | Tukwila
If you find yourself in Tukwila or going to/from the airport, please make a pit stop at Old Saigon. We were greeted by the owner who immediately welcomed us to his “home” and directed us to grab some self-serve tea on the way to our table. It was clearly a family operation and some of the best service I’ve had in a long time. The food was also incredible. We ordered a Banh Mi, vermicelli bowl, and a Mongolian beef dish to share and were impressed. I regret not ordering the Pho, but that will be our next trip.
👀 On my radar
Connection Feast | Various Locations
I first heard about Connection Feast during the pandemic, but it seems just as helpful now since we’re all a little out of practice when it comes to socializing. The founder is a local who created her business to thaw the infamous Seattle Freeze and currently hosts a variety of events and workshops to “spark deeper human connections.” Their next social event is on 2/15 and the theme is how to create magnetic connection.
Moisture Festival | Capitol Hill
This event kicks off in March, but it was one of the best things I went to last year and tickets tend to sell out, so I wanted to put it on your radar early. Moisture Fest is a comedy and variety show that changes its assortment of acts every year (and from show to show). I thought it was going to be cheesy, but I was blown away by the performances I saw last year. This year I’d like to see the Libertease Burlesque show which is the late-night, adults-only version.
